What's the Story?
DAUGHTERS OF THE CULT follows the stories of some surviving ex-members of a cult led by self-proclaimed prophet Ervil LeBaron. Many of these members were also his children. They recount their families' origins, Ervil's rise to power, and his philosophy that relied on violence and murder. Throughout the series, they reflect on how being born into a cult affected them as children and throughout adulthood.
Is It Any Good?
This emotional and harrowing series is a confessional, interview, and roundtable rolled into one. Daughters of the Cult also bring a bit of dark humor into the story; the interactions between the siblings are sometimes humorous when they recall their past, which balances out the serious subject matter. The reunion-style segments are a unique touch in the cult-doc genre. Conversations focusing on violence, predatory sexual relationships, and intense topics make this more suitable for older teens.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the effects of growing up in a cult as shown in Daughters of the Cult. How are the survivors coping with the trauma caused by their father? How does it show up in their adult lives? What do you notice as they interact with each other?
What techniques did Joel and Ervil use to manipulate their members and families? Why do you think those were effective?
