What's the Story?

In DEATH AND OTHER DETAILS, a girl named Imogen Scott (Violett Beane, God Friended Me), who sees her mother killed in an explosion, is taken in by the ultra-wealthy Collier family. When the elder Mr. Collier throws a retirement party for himself on a cruise ship, Imogen runs into the man who sought to solve her mother's mystery. This detective, Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin, Homeland), is said to be the world's greatest sleuth, but Imogen has grown to hate him. Will they work together to solve a mysterious death onboard the ship? Or will she spurn his help when she's implicated in a murder?

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

If an actor can single-handedly save a show, Mandy Patinkin would be the guy to do it. Playing the "World's Greatest Detective, Rufus Cotesworth," with gravelly voiced gravitas, Patinkin rescues Death and Other Details from its mediocrity. When he sets foot on screen, this chatty mystery finds its center.

Teens and adults who enjoy dark mysteries like the Kenneth Branagh interpretations of the French detective Hercule Poirot films might like this one. But there's more sex and drinking in this series, so be ready for it. Glossy, ultra-rich vibes get plenty of screen time in this show too.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about courage in Death and Other Details. How does the main character cope with the death of her mother? What happens when she confronts the truth?

  • Some characters come by their wealth through inheritance, while others work hard for their riches. Who's happier -- those who coast, or those who persevere?

  • The detective in this show asks a child to help him solve her mother's death. How does teamwork help heal this child? How has working with the detective hurt her?
