A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.

Positive Messages

Viewers see some of the wedding planning process, but little of the work that goes on behind the scenes is shown. The couples seem unconstrained by budget or other realities typical couples face, and they're often treated to surprises beyond what they planned. The show celebrates love, engagement, and marriage.

Positive Role Models & Representations

People are committed to each other, but also to having a very extravagant wedding.

Some kissing.

The Disney franchise gets a lot of exposure from the series, mostly related to the entertainment venues and special effects used for the wedding ceremonies.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Sometimes champagne is consumed at wedding receptions.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings is a documentary series in which couples plan extravagant themed weddings in Disney destinations. Money seems to be no object in this process, and the Disney venues make elaborate, impressive accommodations for the couples' many special requests without any pause for the cost. The results are impressive, with ceremonies that have special meaning for the new husband and wife as they relate to their hobbies, their cultures, and their long-held wedding dreams. At the same time, the series is a fantastic and effective advertising production for Disney destinations far and wide. This series isn't likely to draw a young crowd, but even those older viewers who get swept away by the magnificence of these events might need a reality check when the curtain falls.

What's the story?

DISNEY'S FAIRY TALE WEDDINGS makes nuptial dreams come true for couples whose happily ever afters have a special connection to the Disney brand and destinations. Hosted by Allison Holker and husband Stephen "tWitch" Boss, the documentary series features the love stories and wedding planning process of two couples in each episode, devoting time to introducing them and revisiting their relationship and engagement stories, as well as explaining their personal affinities for Disney venues. The couples work alongside Disney representatives to create one-of-a-kind wedding experiences in and around the entertainment complexes.

Is it any good?

If you've ever dreamt of saying "I do" in front of Cinderella's castle wearing a gown that's fit for a ball, then this docuseries will speak to you. These lucky couples need only say the magic words ("I've always dreamed of...") to have just about anything they request in the way of wedding backdrops and décor at their fingertips, and the finished products are awe-inspiring. Just like in the theme parks themselves, there's attention paid to every detail, and with the magnificence of the Disney brand on full display throughout.

This series is a fanciful departure from most people's grasp on real life, especially when it comes to the expense and logistics of planning a ceremony. To its credit, though, it never claims to be anything else. The reality is right in its name -- Fairy Tale Weddings, after all -- and these events are as opulent and impressive productions as are any other in Disney's repertoire. It's not destined for broad appeal certainly, but if celebrations of sweet love stories and festive galas are your thing, then these stunning weddings will wow you.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the process of planning an event like a wedding and how their vision of the perfect ceremony compares to the featured couples'. To what degree are you influenced by how others do something like planning a wedding? Does the extravagance of these ceremonies appeal to you? What do you think is the budget for these events? Is that realistic for you?

  • Do series like Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings celebrate marriage or just the wedding process? How has society's views on marriage changed over time? In what ways do you see this change portrayed in the media?

  • How realistic are docuseries like this one? Can anything we see on TV, in the movies, or on social media be believed as true reality? If so, do these realities align with your own? If not, how does this influence our impression of our own selves and situations?
