What's the Story?

In DOCTOR ODYSSEY, the staff of a cruise ship called The Odyssey are getting ready for a season of voyages. Two nurses, Avery (Phillipa Soo, Hamilton) and Tristan (Sean Teale, Skins), are wondering why they hadn't heard from the doctor they'd worked with for several seasons. To dispel their concerns, Captain Massey (Don Johnson, Rebel Ridge) joins them on the medical deck to explain that the ship's former doctor was released because he hadn't properly contained a contagious illness that caused a scandal the previous year. Perplexed about why Avery, an experienced nurse practitioner, didn't rise in the ranks, Captain Massey informs them that an over-qualified doctor named Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson, Dawson's Creek) would be their new ship's doctor. Will the nurses adhere to Dr. Max's rules? Can Dr. Max keep things calm when he encounters rough waters?

Is It Any Good?

Sleek, well-produced, and addictive, this cruise ship soap has notes of flirty romance but doesn't forget it's a medical drama. The Love Boat meets Grey's Anatomy in Doctor Odyssey, serving heady mix of luxurious encounters and sober medicine.

Parents should be aware that sex is handled in a straight-forward manner in this show; when a man "breaks his penis," the staff don't joke too much about it, but they do talk about how it can happen. There's a sense in this series that the ship's staff's cohesion is of utmost importance, which serves as a mildly refreshing antidote to a slew of rudderless reality shows.
