Dr. Stone
What's the Story?
DR. STONE follows teen genius Senku Ishigami (voiced in English dub by Aaron Dismuke) and his high school friend Taiju Oki (voiced by Rikko Fajardo) as they work to rebuild civilization. Senku and Taiju wake up 3,700 years after a mysterious world-wide incident turns all of humanity to stone. They discover the secret to reviving petrified people, and set off to restore society using Senku's intellect, Taiju's brawn, and the gifts of new allies and old friends.
Is It Any Good?
This smart and silly sci-fi offers a fresh take on post-apocalyptic stories. Dr. Stone rejects the grim narratives that define other apocalypse survival stories. Instead, it's a fun story of friendship, perseverance, and compassion toward others. Senku and Taiju are admirable heroes fighting for the good of all humanity (not just the people they personally deem worthy). The show does miss out on opportunities to introduce more diversity and representation since female characters tend to fall into narrow archetypes (e.g., strong woman warrior, gentle and kind love interest). Dr. Stone does, however, make science education interesting and accessible.
