What's the Story?

In DROPS OF GOD, a woman in Paris named Camille (Fleur Geffrier) receives an urgent call from her estranged father, the world's leading wine expert, who is dying in Japan. Though her memories of him feature domineering and abusive behavior, she slips into the private plane he's chartered for her. Upon landing in Tokyo, Camille discovers that he has set up an intricate challenge where she has to compete with Issei (Tomohisa Yamashita), a man her father considers his "spiritual son." Can Camille retain her sanity, even when her father's wishes seem cruel? Or will she find joy in the journey he's laid out for her?

Tense and lushly produced, this TV adaptation of a popular manga focuses more on looks than subtlety and substance. Drops of God has a driving plot and decent performances, but it ultimately lacks dimension. Viewers might be seduced by the lush filmmaking, the private jets, and the luxe lifestyle—as well as the complicated drama that lurks beneath it all. But parents can probably find better viewing for sophisticated family bingeing.
