What's the Story?
EARTH ABIDES begins with grad student Ish (Alexander Ludwig) getting bitten by a snake and being confined to bed in a remote cabin for a long stretch of time without contact with the outside. When he emerges, Ish discovers that most of the world's population has been killed by a deadly, fast-moving pandemic. Ish must decide whether to look for survivors or forge his own way forward.
Is It Any Good?
George R. Stewart's source novel predates I Am Legend by five years, but the similarity is unmistakable. Subsequently, Earth Abides starts with a familiar premise: a depopulated world in which a lone man must survive. But instead of fighting vampires, protagonist Ish deals with more practical matters. Unfortunately, that's not quite as fun. Ish's simple tasks get stretched out over long periods of time that don't really advance the plot or reveal the character. "If nobody cares what you do for a living, or where you're from, or where you're going, it turns out there's not much for humans to really talk about," says one character early on. While that may be true in this world, it doesn't exactly make for riveting drama.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about isolation. What actions does Ish take after discovering most of the world's population is gone? What do you imagine you would do in a similar situation? Do you agree with Ish's plans?
How does Ish change over the course of the series? What inspires these changes? How do his actions affect the world around him?
