What's the Story?

A mysterious young woman shows up on the doorstep of the recently reconciled Trask brothers' family farm. Her appearance and subsequent connections with the family sets off the epic tale of EAST OF EDEN. Steinbeck's classic, now in the hands of writer Zoe Kazan, chronicles the story of Cathy Ames and the people caught in the whirlwind of her choices.

This utterly compelling tale of manipulation, love, and family is given the time it needs to simmer by Zoe Kazan. East of Eden is a slow burn, but it lets its actors give it their all and bring a modern touch to Steinbeck's story. Florence Pugh excels at her role, making Cathy a sinister character with a hint of sympathy (but just a hint). Faist and Abbott also shine as brothers first torn apart by their father, then by fate (or a series of poor choices). The series doesn't shy away from graphic sex and violence, which some viewers may find shocking, but for this adaptation, it works to add grit and realism to a dark American story.
