Fired on Mars
What's the Story?
Graphic designer Jeff (Luke Wilson) relocates 155 million miles for a job at Mars.ly only to get, that's right, Fired on Mars. Stranded far from home, unable to reach his girlfriend, and completely dependent on the corporate start-up that doesn't want him around anymore, Jeff must figure out how to relaunch his career or find his own way back to Earth.
Is It Any Good?
Sometimes the measure of a good animated comedy is the throwaway jokes. Fired on Mars' best gags are often in the margins --start-up Mars.ly's slogan "Yeah, we went there," for example, or a landline telephone labeled "Phone." The jokes hit because the satire has a such a finely tuned sense of the nuances of corporate life that even the details are immediately recognizable. It's not reaching the heights of all-time workplace comedies like The Office or 30 Rock, but the foundation is at least in place to make a run at it.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Mars.ly. What is the fictional start-up in Fired on Mars? What does it seem to be selling? What is life like for the people for work there?
Who is Jeff? How is he different from the other people who work at Mars.ly? How does he try to adapt? How successful is he?
What is Fired on Mars making fun of? What real life businesses does Mars.ly remind you of? Are they worthy targets for satire? Why or why not?
