What's the Story?
FURIOUS follows new FBI-agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) as she stumbles onto a crime that may have been the work of a serial killer. Meanwhile, that killer is scoping out her next victim and plotting his demise.
Is It Any Good?
There's a thin line between pushing the envelope and exploiting pain. Furious is frontloaded with dark content that doesn't typically find its way into entertainment television. The serial killer plot involves (and shows) human trafficking, sexual violence, and domestic abuse. However, there's never really a sense that Furious treats those topics with the delicacy they demand. The idea of human trafficking is left vague, so viewers won't necessarily walk away with a better understanding of what it is and why it's harmful. Characters are presented as both victims of sexual abuse and sex objects in quick succession. And everything is analyzed and over-analyzed with pop psychology (e.g. "hurt people hurt people") without any real insight or takeaway. It all leaves the feeling that the choices in how to depict sexual abuse have more to do with marketing than with actually raising awareness and helping victims of trauma.

Families can talk about sexual abuse. How is sexual abuse presented in this series? What are some of the consequences of sexual abuse? How do the characters cope with their individual trauma? Do the characters support others or receive support from others?
What is human trafficking? How does human trafficking fit into the plot of Furious? How is it depicted? Does the show give a realistic depiction of this crime and its victims?
What sorts of feelings come up for you when watching Furious? What kind of experience do you think the show's creators want you to have? Is the show trying to entertain or educate?
