Garnachas: Glorious Street Food!
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Hosted by Memo Villegas, GARNACHAS: GLORIOUS STREET FOOD (aka Santas garnachas) is a Mexican miniseries that explores the country's street food scene. Originating in Guatemala, garnachas are a traditional Mesoamerican dish consisting of fried corn tortillas topped with a variety of garnishes, including refried beans, fish, beef, cabbage relish, and other flavorful combinations of ingredients. But content creator and TikTok influencer Andrés "Peluche" Torres argues that all varieties of Mexican fried street food are "garnachas," and sets out to taste the best of them. As he travels to cities and towns around Mexico tasting what local street vendors have to offer, those who are cooking and serving up the tasty dishes teach him some lessons about what makes authentic garnachas and where you can find them. They also happily serve up the best local street food from their communities.
Is It Any Good?
The simple and lighthearted series offers viewers a chance to learn more about Mexico's street food scene. As Peluche Torres visits towns around the country in Garnachas: Glorious Street Food!, the street vendors he meets proudly share the history of the fried snacks they sell and talk about how the recipes originated. They also highlight the differences between authentic garnachas, and how the ingredients used to make them reflect the region in which they are being prepared. Peluche broadly refers to most fried snacks, like chalupas or tlacoyos, as garnachas because they are made with fried corn tortillas and other similar ingredients, or simply because they taste good. But each community he visits is proud of its local fare, and those who prepare it note how important it is to call each dish by its name because it represents a specific culture. Though the overall production is pretty low-budget, and Memo Villegas' silly and sometimes sarcastic narration of events seems out of step with the overall positive focus on Mexican food and culture, Garnachas: Glorious Street Food! makes for a mouth-watering watch.
