What's the Story?

In GIRL TAKEN, teenager Lily (Tallulah Evans) escapes after being kidnapped by her trusted schoolteacher, Rick (Alfie Allen), and held hostage in a basement "dollhouse" for five years. While Lily fights to process the profound trauma of her captivity—which resulted in a forced pregnancy—she returns to a home where everything has changed. Her twin sister, Abby (Delphi Evans), is buried under intense survivor's guilt, while their devastated mother, Eve (Jill Halfpenny), has spiraled into alcohol to cope with her grief. As the Riser women desperately try to stitch their broken family back together, they must also face the terrifying reality of a manipulative predator who attempts to game the legal system to evade final justice.

This crime thriller shifts the focus away from the abduction itself toward the lasting scars. Rather than sensationalizing Lily's five years of captivity, Girl Taken examines the difficult process of rebuilding a life after unimaginable trauma and the ripple effects on the family she returns to. The emotional core is strengthened by compelling performances from Evans and Halfpenny, while Allen delivers an unnervingly restrained performance as the manipulative captor. At its strongest, the series thoughtfully explores themes of survival, maternal love, and the enduring bond between sisters without reducing its subject matter to mere shock value.

As the story progresses, however, its emotional authenticity gives way to increasingly implausible plotting. The latter episodes introduce a series of questionable police decisions and courtroom developments that undermine the drama's credibility. The finale, in particular, favors heightened emotion over narrative payoff, leaving several threads feeling unresolved. Although Girl Taken remains a sincere and often affecting exploration of trauma and resilience, its uneven execution ultimately prevents it from reaching the heights it promises early on.
