Girls Gone Wild: The Untold Story
What's the Story?
Inspired by an article written by Canadian journalist Scaachi Koul, GIRLS GONE WILD: THE UNTOLD STORY is a docuseries about Girls Gone Wild (GGW) home video porn franchise founder and creator Joe Francis and the crimes that eventually sent him into exile. In 2022 Koul traveled to Mexico to interview Francis, who has lived there for over a decade to avoid serving a 270-day jail sentence. What she came away with was nine hours of audio recordings of an interview that describes the 1997 launch of a home entertainment video series featuring female college students and spring breakers partying, exposing themselves, and engaging in sexually explicit behaviors. The excerpts of this interview are featured throughout the show's three installments, along with on-camera conversations with former GGW employees and some of the now-adult women who were prominently featured on these videos. Together they reveal the systematic behind-the-scenes exploitation and victimization of young women to create marketable sexual content. Meanwhile, interviews with public and law enforcement officials like Florida's former Panama City Beach Mayor Lee Sullivan reveal the efforts made to shut down Francis' operation and face the consequences of his actions.
Is It Any Good?
The series, which is a combination of a biopic and true crime, reveals the lurid behind-the-scenes antics Joe Francis and his team used to create and sell sexual content for the now-infamous home entertainment porn series. Girls Gone Wild: An Untold Story highlights how Francis, a young and shrewd entrepreneur, identified a market for extreme reality content at a time when reality entertainment was evolving into a mainstream TV genre. It also reveals how Francis created the multimillion-dollar business by buying late- night TV advertising time (with a little help from Howard Stern) to reach consumers.
But Girls Gone Wild: An Untold Story is really about highlighting how the company purposely turned a blind eye to the fact that many of those who appear on the series are underage, and most were too intoxicated to consent to being on camera or willingly engage in sexual acts. It also sheds light on the failures of the justice system to acknowledge what happened as criminal acts against women and minors. Not everyone will agree with the assertions that Girls Gone Wild helped mold today's popular culture or that Joe Francis laid the foundation for social media influencing. Most will agree, thought that he's arrogant, especially when he characterizes himself as both a survivor and a victim while showing no remorse for his actions. Overall, it's a docuseries that's both scandalous and entertainingly infuriating.
