Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
GOLDIE (Jessica McKenna) is a giant kid trying to navigate life in a town of average-sized people. She goes on adventures with her best friends Teeny (Amari McCoy), a short girl, and Petey (Vedanten Naidoo), a boy who uses a wheelchair. Guest voice actors include Nicole Byer, Henry Winkler, and "Weird Al" Yankovic. Goldie and friends are proud of their differences, but sometimes being different can be hard. Goldie is misunderstood because she's so big, and Teeny isn't respected because she's so small. Goldie, Teeny, and Petey navigate other challenges too. Some are relatable, like trying to throw a surprise party for a friend. Other problems are zany, like helping Goldie get unstuck from concrete. Through it all, Goldie, Teeny, and Petey are best friends who love each other no matter what they look like on the outside.
Is It Any Good?
This is a quirky but funny series with a serious message at its heart. Kids will delight in the excellent visual gags contrasting Goldie (a giant) with her average-sized friends, like when Teeny and Petey row a canoe in a river of Goldie's tears. The humor can feel more adult-focused at times, but there's enough silliness and fantasy to keep kids engaged. Grown-ups will appreciate the message of inclusion, and how the show presents prejudice with nuance. For example, Teeny ends up feeling proud of being small, but notes that people treat her differently when she's wearing stilts. Kids have a difficult time learning social lessons from television, but Goldie could be a great jumping-off point to help grown-ups discuss discrimination with kids.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the empathy Goldie and her friends have for each other. Can you think of a time when Goldie, Teeny, or Petey explained how things are different for them due to their size, physical ability, or other differences? How were their friends able to have more empathy after hearing their perspective?
Goldie sometimes faces prejudice because of the size of her body. Do people ever treat you more positively or negatively because of your appearance? Do you think your friends are ever treated differently based on their appearance?
Goldie and her friends are very good at communicating their emotions with each other. How do you think communicating emotions helps them work through problems together?
