Heavenly Ever After
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
HEAVENLY EVER AFTER is about Hae-sook, a woman in her eighties who worked as a loan shark and used any means necessary to make good on debts. The nature of her job was tough and non-nonsense, but she lovingly cared for her husband, adopted daughter, and cat in life. Now that she's entered the afterlife, she's insecure about whether she belongs there. In the afterlife, Hae-sook is reunited with many people from her past and the impressions she makes are felt from one life to the next. Themes of family connection, good and bad, heaven and hell, forgiveness and acceptance are explored in a tender, gentle and often comical way.
Is It Any Good?
If there's a heart beating in your chest, buckle up for this thoughtful series. Been a rough year and you're not sure you're capable of feeling deep, loving emotion? Try watching Heavenly Ever After. Just lose someone in your life and you're struggling with it? Watch Heavenly Ever After. Keep hearing about Korean dramas and don't know where to start? You guessed it. You don't need to have ever been married, or have had kids, or pets, or even believe in heaven. This series is a unique blend of thoughtful and complex storylines about relationships of all kinds, plus smart dialogue, talented actors (and dubbed voice actors!) as well as generous comedic relief in both the writing, acting and the pastel washes and catchy tune/palette cleansers in each episode's ending credits. It may be overkill to say that this series will make the world a better place, or you a better person, but consider watching for yourself just to be sure.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the nuanced relationship between Lee Hae-sook, her husband Ko Nak-joon, as well as her relationships with her assistant Lee Young-ae, the Pastor and mysterious Som-i. What do you think about how Hae-sook balances toughness and tenderness? Do you know anyone like that?
How is the afterlife in Heavenly Ever After similar or dissimilar to what you and your family think happens once you die? What do you like and dislike about Heavenly Ever After's version?
In Heavenly Ever After, there is a sliding scale that weighs the "good" and "bad" a person possesses and ways to pay your karmic debt. When you think about your own actions in a day, do you reflect on the full spectrum of your behavior and how you can make a moment better or worse by your actions? What are some examples of that?
