What's the Story?

HIGH TIDES (Knokke Off) is a Flemish-Dutch series about a group of privileged 20-somethings and their parents spending the summer in Knokke, a posh Belgian coastal town. Main characters Alexander Vandael (Willem De Schryvr) and his girlfriend Louise Basteyns (Pommelien Thijs) do little but swim, sail, and hang out with their friends. Seems idyllic, but their parents are keeping lots of secrets behind closed doors. Meanwhile, the financially trapped Daan (Eliyha Altena) and his mom Melissa (Anna Drijver) have rented a mobile home for the summer in the area and are hoping to make some cash. While Daan works at a local beach business and catches the attention of Alex and Louisa (albeit in different ways), Melissa is looking for ways to exploit some of the rich families around her.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say : Not yet rated
Kids say ( 1 ):

The edgy, cast-driven series offers viewers a narrative that's filled with love triangles, family dysfunction, and a lack of a moral compass. For better or worse, everyone in High Tides seems to have a secret, which are eventually revealed in different ways. The introduction of Melissa and Daal into this universe not only initiates some dramatic soapy plotlines, but it also creates the context for some obvious social commentary about racism and class distinctions. High Tides is a bit much for younger teen audiences because of its mature content, but it's bingeable entertainment for those old enough to handle it.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the way the series addresses racism and classism in affluent Dutch society. Is this a statement about the Dutch political and social climate today?

  • Television series from Europe often contain more explicit sexual content than the U.S., but not as much violence as seen Stateside. Is this the case in High Tides?
