His & Hers
What's the Story?
When we meet HIS & HERS' Anna (Tessa Thompson), she's at a crossroads in her life. Something happened a year ago that gave her a life-altering jolt and sent her AWOL from her job and, indeed, her whole life. During Anna's absence, work rival Lexy Jones (Rebecca Rittenhouse) took her top news anchor spot on the Atlanta network where both are employed. Now the discovery of a dead body in a Dahlonega, Georgia, forest has given Anna hopes of nabbing her job back. Dahlonega is Anna's hometown, and she has a special connection not just to Dahlonega sheriff Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), but also to the victim herself. As Jack and Anna work feverishly to uncover the secrets behind this brutal crime, long-buried secrets begin to surface.
Is It Any Good?
Powerful acting and some fairly bonkers twists save this ripped-from-the-bestsellers-list murder mystery from drabness. Tessa Thompson makes a wonderful anchor on which to construct the layers of backstory requisite for a limited series like His & Hers; we can glimpse her characters' inner life on her face, even when her dialogue is terse. We slowly learn the Very Bad Things that happened in Anna's past to send her into a tailspin. Some of them are bad indeed (Anna and Jack have a solid reason for splitting up); some of them are positively kooky. Viewers are likely to be left open-mouthed as revelations are unspooled: "No, they didn't!" (Yeah, they did.)
All of this takes away from the verisimilitude of this story, but viewers who appreciate mysteries with a large helping of kitsch won't mind at all. There are love triangles, secret identities, sudden deaths, and sins of the past that bleed into the present, not to mention characters who are faking out everyone around them on a truly demented level. Watching it all play out with Thompson's Anna at the center is lots of fun. Pablo Schreiber as Richard, Anna's louche cameraman, and the husband of fellow anchor Lexy, is equally enjoyable; both Thompson and Schreiber understand what kind of show they're in, and they play their pulpy parts accordingly. If you're looking for an easy-to-digest mystery full of improbable twists that surprise, His & Hers delivers.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the setting for His & Hers and how it affects the narrative. Dahlonega, Georgia, is a small town, and this show's main characters grew up there. How does that influence what happens in this story? How would the story change if it were set in a large city?
Mystery series typically revolve around a death (or several deaths). Why? What's so reliably dramatic about murder or other unnatural deaths?
Have you read the book of the same name that provided the basis for this series? Is it necessary to have read the source material to appreciate a movie or TV show? Does reading the book improve or detract from the experience of watching a show based on that book?
