What's the Story?
HOUSE OF HAMMER is a docuseries about the allegations of sexual violence against a Hollywood actor and how this relates back to the men in his wealthy and influential family. In 2021, Instagram posts of what are alleged to be Armie Hammer's messages to women evidencing his sexual proclivities went viral. Among the references to kink and human paraphilia (sexual cannibalism) are comments that suggest he committed rape. While this allegation is being investigated, several women publicly discuss their individual and consensual relationships with Hammer and how they suffered as a result. The actor's aunt, Casey Hammer, also shares her thoughts about her nephew's behavior, and how it connects to a long legacy of violent men in the family. Journalists and employees discuss their interactions with some of the Hammers over the years, while bloggers offer their opinions about what they think they've uncovered about them.
Is It Any Good?
The sensationalized, tabloid-like series features lots of titillating details about Armie Hammer's sexual predilections and attempts to link them to the sins committed by Hammer family patriarchs. It's based on limited information, most of which has been shared and discussed already on social media by bloggers and entertainment tabloids. While interviews with former girlfriend Courtney Vucekovich were clearly conducted for the purpose of the docuseries, some of the footage of women sharing their experiences were pulled from online press conferences given months earlier.
Meanwhile, as each installment unevenly moves back and forth between the lives of Armie's great grandfather, wealthy and influential oil tycoon Armand Hammer, his grandfather Julian, and his father Michael, details about their many misdeeds (much of which is already public knowledge) are offered as way of explaining (but not forgiving) Armie's antics. However, this is all based on conjecture, and lacks any real evidence to support it. The series also lacks any in-depth conversation about the legal role of consent to sexual activity, choosing instead to focus on the salacious details available through social media. As a result, House of Hammer is more exploitative than informative, and lacks the journalistic integrity necessary to be regarded as a serious narrative about the subject.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about consent. Are media conversations about this topic clear about what it is? What are your legal rights if something is done to you without you giving permission?
What's the difference between informative media and exploitative media? How does a content producer avoid crossing that line? Which side of the line do you think House of Hammer sits on?
