What's the Story?
I AM A KILLER features in-depth interviews with prisoners on death row, or serving the majority of their lives behind bars, and the impact of their crimes on their communities and families. They also recount the events that led them to murder, exploring their motivations and, ultimately, how they now view their crimes after time spent in some of the toughest prisons in the U.S. Themes of rehabilitation versus restitution, repentance, and redemption are explored.
Is It Any Good?
As the true crime craze continues unabated, more complex and nuanced content is beginning to emerge. While TV shows and podcasts in the arena have typically taken a "whodunnit" approach, I Am a Killer points their lens at the circumstances that led to, and ramifications of, the crime. Depending on the episode, this can bring up a number of interesting questions ranging from how equitable the U.S. justice system really is to the morality of the death penalty for the mentally ill. With the notable lack of a narrator, and all dialogue coming from direct-to-camera interviews, the show lacks the sensationalism that plagues many of its counterparts. Instead of gripping mysteries, viewers are given well-rounded stories that include everyone affected by the crime – often not only the perpetrator and victim's family, but also the professionals that worked on the case. Make no mistake, though, the crimes are brutal and the details horrific. Viewers will walk away from the show with an improved understanding of how the American justice and penal systems work and, depressingly, how they often fail.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the format of this series. Why do you think it's done only by interviews direct to the camera? Does it seem any more or less biased than other true crime documentaries you've seen?
Talk about your perceptions of death row criminals. Do they deserve to be where they are? Do you pity them? Do you wonder if they are all guilty of the crimes they were convicted of? Does watching I Am a Killer change your mind?
Are people treated differently for committing the same crimes in different states? Do you think that's fair? Why or why not?
