What's the Story?

I AM MARRIED...BUT! is a Taiwanese comedy about a young married professional contemplating divorce after marrying a mama's boy. Ling I-Ling (Ko-Chia-yen) wasn't interested in getting married until she met the charming Zeng Xue-you (Jasper Liu) after a a minor bicycle accident. Now she's been married for three years, and she and her husband are living with Xue-you's parents and being pressured to have children. I-Ling is desperate to move out of her in-laws house, but her husband doesn't want to tell his mother (played by Ko Shu-chin) that they are leaving or live far from her. I-Ling loves Xue-you, but she often finds herself on the brink of leaving him rather than remaining in a life micromanaged by her mother-in-law. It's a tough cycle to be caught up in, but when her boss makes her and her colleagues download a dating app to satisfy a client, I-Ling makes an unexpected connection that has her reimagining her future in various ways.

The dark romantic comedy, which is subtitled in English, features universal themes associated with romance, marriage, infidelity, motherhood, and love from a woman's point of view. It humorously highlights how love and marriage are glamorized by media while using I-Ling's (Ko-Chia-yen) marital situation to demonstrate how these things are much more complicated (and not always fun) in real life. It also points to what can happen when a partner settles into a comfortable routine in a relationship, rather than being willing to continue work on it. Granted, despite understanding what I-Ling is feeling, it's hard to ignore the emotional infidelity that goes on, despite the fact that a lot of what is presented here is offset by some funny moments. Not everyone will sympathize with the choices made here, but for those who can look past this and are looking for some laughs, I am Married...But! is a solid option.
