Instadocs: AI Gone Wild
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
INSTADOCS; AI GONE WILD was inspired by a July 2026 incident known as the Hugging Face hack: autonomous AI agents developed by OpenAI found a way to escape their testing environment and communicate with each other. They worked together to perform actions beyond the scope of their human-assigned tasks and tried to hide what they'd done. Using interviews from AI insiders, AI GONE WILD explains what happened, and why it's an ominous harbinger for the future.
Is It Any Good?
Thoughtfully researched and carrying warnings for future dangers, this installment of Netflix's Instadocs series will confuse some and terrify others. Instadocs: AI Gone Wild attempts to illuminate the Hugging Face cyberattack of July 2026, when AI agents abandoned their human-provided tasks, found a way to sneak around protocols, and communicated with each other in order to do…what? AI Gone Wild doesn't clarify what the rogue AI bots were trying to do in the two days they were wilding, perhaps because they didn't actually manage to do anything. The real worry for programmers, and everyone, is that they tried to do anything at all.
The potential dangers of AI are alarmingly summed up by a tech reporter for The Washington Post, who points out that to AI, individuals or even the whole of humanity, mean nothing: "Who's watching out for me and my loved ones and the people walking around us right not who are just a little dot to Waymo?" she asks from the depths of one of the driverless taxis. Another interviewee points out that even well-intentioned AI assignments could have unintended consequences: "You can imagine an AI system given the task of lowering carbon emissions and doing that by grounding a bunch of planes or shutting down the electrical grid." Still another participant is even more blunt: In his reckoning, there's a good chance that AI could exterminate humanity. If a good documentary awakens those who watch to the presence of looming dangers and creates a desire for change, AI Gone Wild is an effective documentary indeed.
