A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Invasion is a science-fiction drama about unfriendly aliens arriving on Earth. Violence includes guns and a character being attacked by an unseen force, as well as astronauts being sucked into space. Language includes "a--hole," "s--t," "piss," t-ts," "goddamn," "whore," and frequent use of "f--k," as well as offensive terms including "coon" and "retard." An intimate couple kisses and undresses each other, but no nudity is shown. References to "meth-heads" and meth labs are made, and characters appear to be up to no good in what seems to be a drug den. On the plus side, the show offers diverse representations, including a number of female characters of different ethnic backgrounds holding respected positions, including an astronaut and police officer. There's also a story arc featuring an LGBTQ+ couple.

What's the Story?
As its title suggests, INVASION is a sci-fi drama about aggressive aliens arving on Earth. The series unfolds in a number of locations around the world, including Yemen, New York, Japan, and Oklahoma, and tells its story of unfriendly extraterrestrial visitors from the perspective of different, unconnected characters. These include a retired sheriff (Sam Neill) investigating strange occurences in his small town, a caring mother with an unfaithful husband, and a communications engineer whose astronaut spouse is on a dangerous mission. The series is not your typical Independence Day-like action romp, but rather a slower-paced drama that spends as much time on its characters' personal stories and problems as it does the titular event.
Is It Any Good?
This series offers a decidedly different take on the familiar sci-fi tale of evil-doing extraterrestrials coming to Earth, focusing as much on personal relationships and drama as aggressive little green men. While it's an ambitious, sometimes welcome subversion of the genre, the approach often works to the series' detriment. The show features an interesting, diverse cast of main characters, each of which is depicted with depth and thoughtfulness. In fact, Invasion will initially pull you in with its stories of a respected sheriff who's reluctant to retire, a dedicated mother who's discovered her husband's having an affair, and a space station-bound astronaut missing her partner back home. And, when crossed with the occasional sci-fi strangeness -- from mysterious, mass nosebleeds to crop circles -- these character-driven arcs reflect the series' potential to put a fresh spin on the typical invading aliens story.
Unfortunately, the series leans too heavily in this direction, spending far too much time on its less interesting narrative elements and not nearly enough on the science fiction. The result is an often slow-paced affair that can feel more like a meandering soap opera than compelling sci-fi yarn. The occasional action sequence or mysterious moment will remind you aliens have indeed arrived -- and not peacefully -- but more often than not, their threatening presence on the planet can feel secondary to the show's more down-to-earth story-lines.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Invasion's different cultures. How are characters depicted from diferent parts of the world? Do these depictions feel authentic and accurate? How do the different cultures react to the strange events?
How is Invasion different from similar sci-fi series? Does the show's more spare use of sci-fi elements make it more or less scary? Does its focus on characters' personal lives versus the alien invasion make it more or less interesting?
Are the characters' reactions to the unexplained events appropriate? Do some characters handle the situation better than others? What do you think you would do in a situation like this?
