This epic action fantasy is a promising adaptation of a popular Japanese light novel series. Ishura features in-depth world-building and an ensemble cast of complicated, interesting characters. Thematically, the story does a good job showing the complexities -- and inherent violence -- of heroism. The strong violence can be upsetting but is also compelling because it is rooted in thoughtfully developed political and social conflict. Overall, the show has a slow build, but it's foundations are pretty solid.
