What's the Story?

IT WAS ALWAYS ME (a.k.a. Siempre fui yo) is a musical drama about a young woman who wants to learn more about how her father died. María Guadalupe del Mar Díaz Mint (Karol Sevilla), known as "Lupe," is 22 and lives in Mexico. When her father, a famous folk singer known as "El Faraón" (Christian Tappan), suddenly dies, she travels to the Caribbean coastal town of Cartagena, Colombia to attend his funeral. But after meeting his (former) assistant, Noah Cortéz (Pipe Bueno), and reading her father's diary, she suspects that her late father's death was no accident. Determined to investigate, she remains in Colombia and enters a local music contest, even though she suffers from extreme stage fright. It's the start of an unexpected adventure, but one that Lupe hopes will help her uncover the truth.

The musical soap opera-like drama features a combination of mystery and romance, along with moments of suspense and danger intended to appeal to the young adult crowd. Some tenser scenes in It Was Always Me are offered as flashbacks that document Lupe's interactions with her father before he died; they give some potential clues as to what happened to him. Meanwhile, there's lots competitive behavior between music contestants trying to outshine each other, and intense sibling rivalry between Lupe and her half-brother Felipe "Pipe" Díaz (José Julián Gaviria). But It Was Always Me is also about Lupe's journey of self-discovery as she learns more about who she is and what she can accomplish. All of this, combined with lots of tunes, make it an entertaining watch.
