What's the Story?

JARROD CARMICHAEL REALITY SHOW begins with Carmichael preparing to attend the Emmys. He's nominated for a comedy special in which he came out of the closet, and he's still dealing with the aftermath. He's developed feelings for his best friend and had a falling out with his parents. And now there's a camera crew following him around all the time.

HBO has become the spot for reality shows that question how real reality shows are. Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, with smirkingly generic title and confessional stand-up routines, follows incredible shows like The Rehearsal and How to with John Wilson in that mini-genre. Carmichael's offering is more of a mess than its predecessors (its best bit is a famous friend who shows up in a balaclava and black visor because he wants to stay anonymous), but he's able to use the format to dive into thornier issues around coming out and gay culture in general. It's not quite as mind-blowing and fun as other is-this-reality-or-not? shows, but it might end up being more meaningful.
