What's the Story?
JOURNAL WITH WITCH follows Makio (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro), a 35-year-old introverted novelist who loves being alone. When her sister passes away in a fatal car accident, Makio agrees to take in her sister's 15-year-old daughter, Asa (voiced by Fuko Mori). Together, they face the challenges of living together, clashing lifestyles, and dealing with grief. Over time, they grow and change in their own ways as life will never be the same.
Is It Any Good?
This mature anime show has a refreshingly unique plot. Journal with Witch doesn't hide the unfortunate circumstances of real life, like being estranged from family members, the tragedy of losing one's parents, or the struggles of adjusting to having a new roommate. It also highlights the good parts of life, like discovering and accepting who you are and building new relationships. The show is easy to pay attention to and has a calm and pleasant tone overall despite the sometimes sad and grown-up topics.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Asa keeps a journal to deal with her grief. Can you think of any other methods that may help people handle big emotions?
Do you think it was difficult for Makio to take in her sister's daughter, when her sister was so mean to her? How do you think she was able to do so?
