What's the Story?
Hosted by Korean American actor Daniel Dae Kim (K-Pop Demon Hunters and Lost), K-EVERYTHING is a CNN docuseries that devotes each episode to a different Korean global export, from the infectious beats of K-pop to the meticulous routines of K-beauty. Kim travels to South Korea to investigate how this small island nation managed to conquer the world with its cultural exports in just one generation.
Is It Any Good?
Both fascinating and eye-opening, this docuseries balances the flashy veneer of the "Korean Wave" with the heavier economic and social pressures that birthed it. Kim, who was born in Korea before immigrating to America with his family as a young child, serves as a gentle and inquisitive host, even willing to be a guinea pig when the situation calls for it. While the show is visually vibrant and fast-paced, it's also a bit sobering as it paints a picture of a society defined by painfully exacting standards and extreme competition. All in all, it's a compelling glimpse into a cultural revolution that's still unfolding. Viewers will likely walk away with the feeling that they've only begun to scratch the surface.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about host Daniel Dae Kim's mention that beauty standards in Korea are often traced back to Western ideals. How do global media and social media change what we think is "beautiful," do you think that's a good thing? Why or why not?
The series shows how Korea rebuilt itself from war and poverty into a world leader. How does a community's history of resilience and perseverance affect the way they view success today? Discuss how overcoming obstacles can create a shared sense of purpose.
The show describes Korean culture as "extremely competitive" due to past economic struggles. Do you think this type of environment helps people achieve more, or is more likely to lead to burnout? How do you find a balance?
The show highlights how remarkable it is that Korea has made so many cultural advancements in only a generation. How much of this can be attributed to this generation of entrepreneurs leaning into their curiosity in order to innovate? One example of this is the featured scientist who found success harvesting snail mucin for skin care, what are some other examples that stood out to you?
