What's the Story?
KAALA PAANI (aka Dark Water) is an Indian thriller about surviving a mysterious illness that's plaguing the country's island territories. It's 2027, and a local (fictitious) Indigenous tribe on the remote islands of Andaman and Nicobar known as the Orakas are relocating deep into the forest as a strange epidemic begins to spread throughout the area. Reports of illness prompt Chief Medical Officer Dr. Soudamini Singh (Mona Singh) to issue a warning to authorities, and subsequently learns that the symptoms of said epidemic resemble those of a peculiar, but deadly, illness from almost a decade prior. However, the (fictitious) multimillion dollar corporation ATOM wants to maximize investment opportunities in the area, and profiteering police officer Ketan Kamat (Amey Wagh) wants to ensure that the Swaraj Mohatsav winter festival takes place as planned in hopes of luring in thousands of tourists. Among them are Santosh and Gargi Salva (Vikas Kumar and Sarika Singh, respectively) and their children, whose plans include touring both islands with the help of local resident Chiranjeevi "Chiru" Prabhu (Sukant Goel), who, unlike his family, cares little about the environmental impact this tourism is having. Soon it becomes clear that the bacterial outbreak has put the lives of everyone on the islands in danger, and has the potential of spreading further. While medical staff like intern Ritu Gagra (Radhika Mehrotra) and Jyotsna Dey (Arushi Sharma) are doing what they can to help the sick and find a cure, those on the islands have no way to leave, and must do what they can to survive.
Is It Any Good?
The Indian thriller offers a variety of character-driven stories told against the backdrop of a deadly eco-disaster. The remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands, once home to the infamous Cellular Jail, a colonial penal colony known as "Black Water" (where thousands of Indian freedom fighters were held and tortured by the British), serve as a natural and deadly prison from which people cannot escape. The stories of the individual characters unfold within this tiny universe, highlighting the civil and physical deterioration of the society. These plotlines are interesting, but are too many, and as the epidemic rages they slow down the pace of the series. Nonetheless, there are also parts of Kaala Paani that are entertainingly tense, and can make it worth the watch.
