La Palma
What's the Story?
LA PALMA is a story about a Norwegian family of four who go to the Canary Island of La Palma on a Christmas vacation. Extreme toxic gas eruptions begin killing tourists, and the threat of a major lava eruption looms. The family is tipped off by relatives back in Norway who are privy to local government information about the expected eruption, and as the need to evacuate becomes greater, the ability to do so becomes more limited. Chaos, tension, and violence grow as extreme as the natural disaster conditions themselves.
Is It Any Good?
If you enjoy natural disaster movies like Twister, Armageddon, and The Wave, you will probably enjoy this series. Some of the "science" La Palma's researchers use to explain a tsunami hitting the same location where its origin volcano occurs feels padded for convenience, and there are a smattering of special effects that are quite unrealistic looking. However, the dialogue between characters isn't as cheesy as your typical disaster film, and the actors are all strong.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how La Palma takes an average family vacation and destroys it with out-of-control nature. Is this a realistic depiction?
After a volcano begins to erupt, there is fear of a tsunami destroying the rest of the island. Have you or has anyone in your family experienced a natural disaster or extreme weather? How did it change you and bring you together as a family?
In the face of danger, some of the characters show their worst behavior. When you and your family are experiencing extreme stress, how do you behave? Can you do anything to better manage your stress?
