What's the Story?
LEVERAGE: REDEMPTION features a group of reformed criminals who've reunited to help victims of corporate and governmental injustice. The reboot of the original 2008 series stars Gina Bellman as Sophie Devereaux, a grifter who once helped her late husband track down stolen property to take down rich and powerful people who use their positions to exploit others. Now widowed, she's no longer interested in this type of work. But when the old team -- including former Black Ops soldier and retriever specialist Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane), a.k.a the Hitter, hacker Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge), and Parker (Beth Riesgraf), the group's professional thief -- shows up, Sophia is compelled to give it another go. She agrees to help bring down pharmaceutical company boss Fletcher Maxwell (Reed Diamond), who refuses to settle with people who fell victim to the opioid crisis his drugs created. Helping the Leverage crew is Harry Wilson (Noah Wyle), Maxwell's former fixer. Things have changed after more than a decade, and the gang now find themselves dealing with new technology, social media platforms, and secretive and dangerous private security teams. Nonetheless, they are still committed to their mission, and will commit the necessary crimes to help those who need it.
Is It Any Good?
The updated installment of the fun and farfetched franchise continues the Robin Hood-like tradition of taking from the power hungry and rich to help the unfortunate. In Leverage: Redemption the technology is updated, and many of the scams are more sophisticated, but the process by which they plan and execute each altruistic crime is still entertaining to watch. The interactions within the team also offer their share of lighthearted moments.
Thanks to the reprisal of some of Leverage's key original roles, Leverage: Redemption creates an automatic sense of familiarity for its original fan base. But while there are references to past events, the inclusion of new characters, like tech and social media wiz Breanna (played by Aleyse Shannon), keep it from getting too nostalgic and make it feel more relevant. Overall, the show will entertain both those who watched the original series and those who are new to it.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the mission of the Leverage group. Does the fact that they are illegally hacking into computers, stealing, and scamming corporate and government entities to help people make their behavior less criminal? Or is this simply a way of justifying the crimes they enjoy committing?
How does Leverage: Redemption compare to the original series? Has this contemporary reboot been able to recreate the elements that made the original show popular? What changes have been made to make it interesting and entertaining for people new to the franchise?
