What's the Story?
LIFE OF KYLIE is the sixth spinoff of the Keeping Up with the Kardashians reality TV juggernaut, centered on youngest daughter Kylie Jenner, who's as famous for being Kim Kardashian's little sister as she is for being a multi-millionaire CEO thanks to her lip kit empire (Kylie Cosmetics). The show promises us an inside look at the personal and professional life of the entrepreneur and social media superstar straight from the horse's mouth, with additional input from those closest to her, such as BFF Jordyn Woods.
Is It Any Good?
Here we are with yet another series from the Kardashian-Jenner family full of raging materialism and empty navel-gazing. The family has been profiting from their hyper-extended "15 minutes of fame" for nearly a decade, and you'd think by now they'd have run out of contrived dramas and scripted revelations to televise.
Kylie says this show will help fans understand "the real me," but as it progresses, it becomes painfully clear that even she doesn't know who that person is. She complains about having to keep up appearances and the stresses of fame, yet she spends all her time courting it via sexy selfies, club appearances, and magazine covers. Hypocritical? Sure, but hardly surprising given that the 19-year old has literally grown up in the limelight, with a fame-skewed perception of what life is really like. In a rare moment of self-reflection, she admits that she doesn't really know who she's trying to please with her lifestyle, which is depressing, especially as she doesn't pursue this train of thought in any meaningful way. She claims she has "no interests" other than her makeup line, and a show about someone with no interests outside of her own concerns is anything but "must see" TV.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Kylie's life differs from that of an average teenager. Does being in the public eye force people to behave differently than they would otherwise? What kind of long-term effects might this have on a person?
Kylie says she feels misunderstood, and like she is presenting a false persona to her fans because it's what is expected of her. Does this seem like a lifestyle that would build up or tear down a person's self-esteem? What does it mean to live authentically?
