Living for the Dead
What's the Story?
LIVING FOR THE DEAD is an eight-episode ghost-hunting series produced and narrated by megastar actress Kristen Stewart, and starring five supernaturally-inclined queer folk who work in fields like tarot card reading, paranormal investigation, and spiritual healing. The team traverses the country in a campy-cozy RV, stopping by various homes and venues beset by weird happenings to help get to the bottom of what otherworldly spirits and specters might be lurking there -- and just what it is they want.
Is It Any Good?
Any viewer's enjoyment of a ghost-hunting series depends on their own beliefs when it comes to the supernatural, but this particular series offers more dimension and warmth than similar fare. Living for the Dead absolutely has all the stereotypical tropes at play -- inexplicable noises, cool breezes coming out of nowhere, weird specks in a photograph being chalked up to ghostly interference -- but there's a real charm to the relationships among the team members. Led by the especially charismatic Roz, a wisecracking trans woman and paranormal investigator, the group places a big emphasis on folks (be they ghouls, goblins, or heterosexual parents struggling to understand their gay kids) learning to empathize and co-exist peacefully with one another. So while there's nothing really groundbreaking about the show's portrayal of spirit-tracking, the emotional and humorous aspects of Living for the Dead are worth tuning in for.
