Love 101
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
LOVE 101 takes place in the late 1990s and centers on a group of prep-school teens who are on the brink of being kicked out due to their growing list of transgressions -- be it starting a riot in debate club, fist-fighting the basketball ref, or sipping on a flask of booze in class. A tense meeting among staff takes place and the votes in favor of the group's expulsion are nearly unanimous, but an open-minded and sweet teacher named Burcu casts the lone opposing vote that keeps the kids in school. When Burcu's transfer to another school goes through and being suspended is back on the table, the troublemaking kids come up with a scheme to keep her around -- and it all hinges on getting her to fall in love with the hunky new gym teacher.
Is It Any Good?
This is an unexceptional but inoffensive enough coming-of-age drama with touches of romantic comedy that doesn't offer many surprises. We've seen all the Love 101 story beats done before and done better. A goody-two-shoes has a crush on the school bad boy. The sarcastic, hard-drinking teen has a troubled home life. None of the characters in Love 101 stand out as particularly compelling or likable, and the idea of manipulating your teacher's love life for your own benefit is just creepy -- especially when it's being done by committee.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the show's general vibe. There are romantic elements, some lightly comedic parts, but also drama. Do you like show that pick a lane and stick to it, or does the blend of genres work?
Love 101, like many shows and movies before it, centers on young people secretly trying to make a couple fall in love. Could this ever work in real life? Why or why not?
