Love Never Lies: South Africa
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
A spin-off of the Love Never Lies franchise, LOVE NEVER LIES: SOUTH AFRICA is a reality game show that tests couples' ability to tell the truth about themselves and their relationships. Hosted by actress and model Minnie Dlamini, it features six couples who are in love with each other but feel the need to dig deeper into their relationships. They're subjected to a lie detector, which scans their eyes while they give answers to difficult questions about their behavior. The couples are also separated to give them time to reflect on their relationships, and for a chance to meet singles, which also leads to some difficult truth-telling ceremonies. Every time the lie detector deems that someone is telling the truth, money is added to a pot of 500R (about $28K), and every deceitful answer leads to money being subtracted from it. At the end of the experience, the couples must come to terms with how it has changed them. Meanwhile, the couple who gave the most "truth" answers gets to walk away with the accumulated cash, which may potentially add up to R1 million (roughly $56K).
Is It Any Good?
The exploitative series features couples attempting to strengthen their loving relationships, using cash as an incentive to get people to tell the truth about their dishonesty. The couples, which hail from heteronormative and LGBTQ+ communities, claim confidence in their love for each other but admit that they don't trust their partners to communicate honestly or hang out with single people. Not surprisingly, many of these folks already know what the truth is but are seeking confirmation so they can determine how to handle it. There's lots of arguing and tears, and in some cases, viewers are left wondering why these people are together in the first place, especially when a partner decides to quickly hook up with singles at one of the villas. Viewers may also question why contestants lie when the detector allegedly has the power to call them out. Nonetheless, those who like voyeuristic unscripted series will appreciate the soap opera-like drama that ensues, while game show enthusiasts might be interested in who wins the money pot. But when it comes to understanding relationships, Love Never Lies: South Africa isn't very constructive.
