What's the Story?

Hosted by Sangita Patel, LOVE & TRANSLATION is a dating show where men from the United States are trying to find their perfect match among a group of non-English speaking women. Three bachelors are sent to a tropical paradise in the Dominican Republic and are presented to a group of 12 women from nine different countries in Asia, Central and South America, Western Europe, and North Africa. But none of the women speak English, and the men don't speak their languages or are allowed translation technology to help communicate with them. As a result, each of the men must find non-verbal ways of communicating to get to know each woman and determine if one of them is his love match.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 1 ):
Kids say : Not yet rated

The predictable dating social experiment attempts to stay away from objectifying women simply because they're foreign by focusing on being able to overcome language barriers to find love. It offers all of the flirtations, backstabbing behaviors, arguing, and drinking one comes to expect from these types of shows. Also familiar are the dramatic revelations stemming from conversations between the women, which are facilitated through their shared translation technology.

Watching the men struggle to communicate with the women, many of whom spend the time staring blankly at them, leads to some awkward and humorous moments. But what Love & Translation manages to do is highlight how ignorant the men on the series are when it comes to geography, and the gender and cultural stereotypes on which expectations about both the men and women are being built.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about spending time with someone who doesn't speak the same language(s) you speak without any translation help. How would you communicate? What would you discuss?

  • Some women on Love & Translation have ideas about what U.S. men are supposed to be like. How much of this is based on stereotypes? Did media contribute to their points of view?
