What's the Story?

The Spanish dramatic comedy A muerte, a.k.a. LOVE YOU TO DEATH features two people who fall for each other while coping with the unpredictable. Raúl (Joan Amargós) is ready for his best friend Edu (Cristian Valencia) to move out and his girlfriend girlfriend Georgina (Paula Malia) move in. But he soon finds himself thinking about life and death after he is diagnosed with cardiac sarcoma and is scheduled for a difficult heart surgery in three weeks. Meanwhile, Marta (Verónica Echegui), an edgy advertising professional who likes her wild and independent life, finds herself grappling with the idea of motherhood. It's a time of transition for both of them, but after a chance meeting at a funeral, they impulsively dive headfirst into what becomes a whirlwind relationship.

Writing a good dramatic comedy so that it strikes a balance between cancer and unexpected pregnancy isn't easy. But Love You to Death is a perfect example of how it can be done. The series has its share of thoughtful moments, but the well-timed witty banter between the cast keeps the story entertaining while remaining sensitive to the upheavals Raúl and Marta are facing. Meanwhile, Edu is genuinely sympathetic, but refuses to let Raúl give up on life, which also leads to some comical moments. This humor is consistent thanks to the additional characters with whom the protagonists interact. There's a chance that some folks will have a hard time with the serious themes it addresses. Nonetheless, this is a series about the randomness of life and love, and how two people's individual journeys collide to create something wonderfully unexpected.
