What's the Story?
Set in Puebla, Mexico, in 1910, just months before the Mexican Revolution, LOVESICK follows Emilia, a young woman raised by her freethinking father to question society's expectations. She puts her chemistry skills to work in his apothecary, while he encourages her interest in medicine despite society's belief that women shouldn't become doctors. When Emilia's closest friend, political activist Daniel, returns to town after five years away, their relationship quickly becomes romantic against the backdrop of growing political unrest. The series combines romantic and political intrigue as revolution, and a potential love triangle, looms.
Is It Any Good?
This Mexican production is an appealing mix of historical drama, romance, and political intrigue, elevated by elaborate costumes and sets, along with a playful score that keeps the tone of from becoming too heavy. The romance between Emilia and Daniel in Lovesick is immediate and decidedly steamy, but there's enough chemistry between them to make it believable, even as a possible love triangle emerges. Meanwhile plot lines about women's independence overlap with brewing tensions as the country moves toward revolution. The passionate romance will draw viewers, in while the historical setting and political storylines will provide the substance to make them stay.
