What's the Story?

Inspired by actual events, MAAMLA LEGAL HAI is an Indian workplace comedy about the quirky folks at the Patparganj District Court in Delhi. Vishwas Pandey (Anant V. Joshi) manages the lower court, in which lawyers like V.D. Tyagi (Riva Kishanm), the self-proclaimed head of the Patparganj Bar Association, successfully tries court cases by finding loopholes in the legal system. He also enjoys the benefit of having his own chambers and two interns; plus he can talk to colleagues like the wise Munshiji (Vijay Rajoria) and his friend and colleague Mintu (Anjum Batra) about his higher aspirations. Meanwhile, the strong and argumentative Sujata "Didi" Negi hopes to have her own legal chamber someday, even though she's never worked a case. Adding to the fray is Harvard-educated newbie Ananya Shroff (Naila Grewal), who's struggling to balance her altruistic goals with the pragmatism required to make a living. Whether it's dealing with sleazy colleagues, working bizarre cases, or just giving clients the run-around, they all have to find innovative ways to navigate the chaos.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say : Not yet rated
Kids say ( 1 ):

The Indian comedy, available dubbed and subtitled in English, offers a humorous look at the day-to-day antics of folks navigating the country's lower court system. While Maamla Legal Hai centers around an ensemble cast of off-beat lawyers, they're surrounded by an endless array of colorful characters ranging from attorneys outside the courthouse trying to drum up clients to plaintiffs seeking help with some interesting problems. Many of the eccentric cases are inspired by true events (including a parrot standing trial for swearing).

Despite the comedic elements, the show still manages to point to some more serious real-life issues. It covers exploitation of subordinates by superiors, nepotism, and the inability of the average person to find justice thanks to a lack of money, bureaucracy, and endless legal maneuverings. Granted, some of the humor doesn't translate easily, and some installments are funnier than others. But overall, Maamla Legal Hai offers an amusing take on folks working in the Indian justice system.
