What's the Story?

MAIGRET follows Chief Inspector Jules Maigret (Benjamin Wainwright) and his team, La Crim—the serious crime unit—as they solve crimes in Paris. Maigret and his wife, Louise (Stefanie Martini), are trying to have their first child, and the detective must manage his anxiety over becoming a father while pursuing justice for complex cases under the watchful eye of Prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel (Nathalie Armin). Will he be able to juggle it all?

The Masterpiece banner implies a certain level of quality in mystery series, and this entry is a reminder that a show doesn't necessarily need to be utterly unique to be satisfying. Built for both casual viewers and mystery hounds, Maigret sets itself apart in subtle ways—Maigret's healthy relationship with his wife, for example, or his empathy for the criminal class. Overall, Maigret feels expressly built to deliver a nuts-and-bolts procedural whodunnit, which it does with satisfying precision. Expecting anything more would be a stretch.
