What's the Story?

Hosted by Dropout network CEO Sam Reich, MAKE SOME NOISE is a game show that features three stand-up comics and/or improv actors who compete to try to make up and act out scenarios on the spot when given a prompt such as "Advanced ways to order your eggs." Contestants do improvs solo, in pairs, and then in groups of three. Reich awards them points for their skill, and the contestant with the most points at the end of the game goes home with the coveted Golden Ear award.

With its chuckles ranging from mild to medium intensity, viewers' opinions on this Whose Line Is It Anyway-ish game show will largely depend on their enthusiasm for improv. And possibly on how much they consumed CollegeHumor content back in the day. That 2000s-era website made its bones with short-form comedy videos that were all the rage on YouTube, and then Facebook, and then Make Some Noise host Sam Reich bought the diminished brand in 2020 and turned it into the Dropout network. Make Some Noise, a venerable feature at CollegeHumor, is now a Dropout mainstay, and just like on the original shows, it features a revolving cast of comics and improvisers.

Some faces on Make Some Noise are recognizable, particularly to comedy fans: Wayne Brady shows up on the second season, and Lisa Gilroy (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) makes a first-season appearance. Viewers who were CollegeHumor fans will also recognize familiar faces like Zac Oyama and Brennan Lee Mulligan, who appear regularly. The humor and ambient level of antics varies with the cast of each show: Sometimes the contestants manage to hit surprising comic heights; at other times, the laughs are more subdued. It's a typical track record for improv, which can be painful or exquisite, depending on who's on stage and what they're given to do. If comedy that can surprise both the viewer and the comics themselves is something viewers enjoy, Make Some Noise might be another thing.

  • Families can talk about the issue of what stretches the boundaries of comedy. When is a joke taken too far? Why is sexual comedy so enticing to the actors—and the audience?

  • Is stereotyping a necessary evil in comedy? Where is the line between funny and hurtful, especially when someone is the subject of impersonation?

  • What accounts for a show's sustainability? Does this series' style have a longer lifespan than the average sitcom does? If so, why? How are the comedians able to keep the jokes so fresh?
