Margo's Got Money Troubles
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
MARGO'S GOT MONEY TROUBLES follows Margo Millet (Elle Fanning) after an affair with her English professor leaves her abandoned and pregnant. Struggling with a newborn and no money, Margo leans on her mom Shayanne (Michelle Pfeiffer), who reluctantly supports her, but is also preoccupied with restarting her own life. Her absent father Jinx (Nick Offerman), a pro wrestler, blows onto her doorstep just as her roommate Susie (Thaddea Graham) suggests Margo should take up modeling. As she journeys through identity, self-worth, and motherhood, Margo goes through obstacles far beyond what she's written before.
Is It Any Good?
This series is energetic, emotional, and endearing. Margo's Got Money Troubles is fun and magnetic. Fanning's portrayal of Margo's journey from hopeful naivete to heartbreak, joy, and resilience is done well. The relationship between Pfeiffer and Fanning is refreshingly fond and flawed. The strong language, sex, violence, and drinking make this suitable for older teens.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about book adaptations in television. Margo's Got Money Troubles is based on the book of the same by Rupi Thorpe. Why do you think so many books get adapted into TV shows? What do you think was the appeal of this book? Which format do you think the story works better in?
What are some of Margo's admirable character traits? What about her not-so-admirable ones? How does she develop over the course of the series?
