What's the Story?
Hosted by comedian Jo Koy, METAL SHOP MASTERS is a reality series featuring seven metal fabricator artists who weld, grind, cut, torch, melt, and bend steel to create one-of-a kind pieces in limited amounts of time. As they work, recorded interviews with the contestants reveal their thinking behind the project, and the specific tools and techniques they are using are briefly deconstructed. Stephanie Hoffman, a former president of the American Welding Society, and renown metal sculptor David Madero observe their processes and then judge the finished pieces. Those who produce world-class work are set to impress, while those who do not get sent home. The winner gets the title, a trophy, and $50,000.
Is It Any Good?
The distinctive reality competition features talented metal fabricators showing off their creativity and technique while competing for a title and a cash prize. From building avatars and robots to unique vehicles, the fabricators are tasked with creating pieces that feature multiple components, have moving parts, and reveal their artistic personality. What they come up with is impressive, and folks who enjoy the art form or are curious about what goes into metal fabrication will enjoy watching the process from start to finish. But if you're not, chances are that Metal Shop Masters won't spark much interest.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about metal fabricator artists. What kind of expertise do they need to create works of art out of steel and other metals? How has the use of computers changed the way they go about fabricating?
The welders on Metal Shop Masters are hoping to win money, but are there are other benefits to appearing on the TV series? Are there any drawbacks?
