Mid-Century Modern
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
After the death of their friend (and sometimes lover) George, Bunny (Nathan Lane), Jerry (Matt Bomer), and Arthur (Nathan Lee Graham) are bereft. When Bunny suggests that they all move in together to his MID-CENTURY MODERN home in Palm Springs, the three friends become housemates. There's chaos, pathos, and lots of sex jokes as the trio learn to live together while managing their own relationships and lives.
Is It Any Good?
This lighthearted series pays deep homage to The Golden Girls, down to the lingering shot of Bunny's house exterior. It uses retro framing (the classic multi-cam sitcom) and a literal retro environment in Bunny's well-appointed Mid-Century Modern Palm Springs home. The show has some bite compared to its sitcom predecessors, but also feels tamer than it could. The actors are pros; Lane shines as the insecure Bunny, and it's fun to see the often seen supporting actor Graham thrive as a lead. Late legendary actor Linda Lavin is also clearly having a great time playing Bunny's mother. That said, jokes often fall flat and plots can feel contrived. It's also hard to tell if the show is playing with stereotypes or simply perpetuating them. Mid-Century Modern has charm, but it may not be quite modern enough for 2025 audiences.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the friendship on display in Mid-Century Modern. How has this trio stayed together after so many years? What are their challenges?
What do you think about the sitcom format, including laugh tracks? Does it still work for modern comedies? Why, or why not?
Do you think the show leans on gay and Jewish stereotypes for humor? Does it matter that the actors and showrunners themselves are gay and Jewish? Why, or why not?
