Midsummer Night
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
MIDSUMMER NIGHT is the story of Carina (Pernilla August) wanting to divorce husband Johannes (Dennis Storhøi ) after 30+ years of marriage. Her hope is to tell the family while they are all together celebrating Midsummer together. Daughters Hanne (Amalia Holm) and Helena (Sofia Tjelta) are involved in their own complicated romances, as is Carina's brother Håkan (Christopher Wollter). Additional dinner guests include Carina's best friend and her son (who's also Hanne's ex), as well as Hanne's current fiancé and his parents and younger brother. Carina's brother brings his new, much younger girlfriend to the celebration, and Johannes's daughter from a pervious marriage is also there. As the series unfolds, the relationship secrets of each character, some of which are intimately linked, become exposed. It's co-written and directed by Per-Olav Sørensen (Nobel, Heavy Water War, Home for Christmas, A Storm for Christmas).
Is It Any Good?
The scenery and Midsummer traditions are lovely, the character development and storytelling are intriguing, and the acting is top-notch in this show. Midsummer Night director Sørensen gives us likable characters who don't always do likable things, but in the end you really want the best for each character. A very touching, sometimes funny, sometimes tearful, and often relatable series, Midsummer Night is a fantastic family watch for a range of older children.
