Is It Any Good?

Despite its mature themes and intense content, the series has an intriguing plotline that's bound to keep young viewers hooked for the full eight episodes. Minerva Academy strikes a similar chord to 13 Reasons Why by following a sympathetic character who's willing to do what it takes to find out what happened to his friend. While his methods often don't set a positive example, he and other characters exist in the grey space of coming-of-age, where mistakes turn into opportunities for growth and learning. For teens and families who don't mind violence, nudity, and language, this series could spark conversation about systemic discrimination and how to respond to intimidation.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the school system presented in Minerva Academy. Does that portrayal seem realistic to you? Are teens hostile and mean to one another in real life?

  • The school commissioner says girls need to work twice as hard as boys. How does gender affect a student's success in school? Can you think of examples from the show?

  • Teens in the show constantly break rules and commit questionable acts. Are there instances when that's acceptable?

  • Characters in the show are afraid of speaking out against the system, but a few do. What can you gain from telling the truth?
