What's the Story?
Danny Cage runs the Monster Factory school in Paulsboro, New Jersey, where aspiring professional wrestlers go to hone their craft and wait for a shot at a career. The series focuses on five students -- the Notorious Mimi, Gabby Ortiz, Twitch, Goldy, and Bobby Buffet -- as they grind their way toward a showcase for pro scouts that might be their ticket to the big leagues.
Is It Any Good?
In a world oversaturated with reality TV and documentary series, the world of pro wrestling is a surprisingly fresh and fascinating subject. Like wrestling itself, Monster Factory splits the difference between athleticism and entertainment, with focus on the craft and dedication needed to succeed in the industry. Even though its subjects are nearly always shown in a positive light, the series feels like it has more access to their lives than typical sports documentaries. Overcoming adversity is a recurring theme, and the show makes it easy to see why wrestling draws such a diverse and dedicated audience. Monster Factory may be structured like a typical sports drama, building up to a make-or-break showcase at the end, but the underdog stories here feel more poignant and earned than most.
