Parent and Kid Reviews

What's the Story?

MTV'S FAMILY LEGACY is a docuseries featuring the adult children of successful music celebrities talking about how their parents' careers has affected their lives. From living a life on the road or hanging out with wild band members, to enjoying an ordinary life like any other kid, folks like Andrew Hagar, the son of rocker Sammy Hagar; Baylee Littrell, son of NSYNC's Brian Littrell; Backstreet Boy Joey Fatone's daughter Briahna Fatone; and Draven Bennington, the son of Linkin Park's late lead vocalist Chester Bennington talk about the moment they really understood that their parent was a music star who wasn't like most parents. They also talk about some of the more difficult situations they faced growing up, including going long periods of time without seeing their parents during tour season, or coping with their deaths. In addition, family photos and videos are shared, and archived footage of key concert performances, and MTV programs and award ceremonies help highlight key moments in their parents' careers.

The entertaining series is as much a chronicle of adult children's homages to their music celebrity parents as it is an homage to MTV for helping said parents' careers. The conversations about growing up as a music celebrity's kid are interesting, and they offer some surprising insights into what their parents were really like when not on stage or in a recording studio. Sometimes their famous parent also makes an appearance during the interview. But at least half of each conversation is spent showcasing their parents' memorable music television moments, ranging from performances at the MTV Music Awards to being featured on MTV's Cribs and TRL. Regardless, MTV's Family Legacy features lots of touching moments, especially when the adult kids tearfully talk about how proud they are of their parent. Folks who grew up during the height of the MTV years will appreciate the flashbacks, and might even be startled by how old some of these artists (and their children) are today. They may also be impressed by how these adult children are choosing to carry on the family legacy, or start new ones.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about legacies. Coming from a family that has produced generations of talented artists, leaders, inventors, teachers, etc. is something to be proud of, but what pressures can that potentially put on future family members?

  • Were you surprised to learn that some of the music artists featured on MTV's Family Legacy had children? Why did they keep their kids out of the media spotlight when they were young?
