Naked Attraction
What's the Story?
NAKED ATTRACTION is a British dating series that features people meeting for the first time in their birthday suits before going out on an actual clothed date. In each episode host Anna Richardson introducing six singles standing naked in individual screened booths to a guest looking for someone compatible to date. During the first two phases, the screens are raised to reveal the potential dates' lower halves, and then their chests areas. Both Richardson and her guest look at their naked bodies, discuss physical and sexual preferences, and talk candidly about sex. At the end of each phase, at least one date candidate is politely eliminated. After the opportunity to see the remaining candidates' faces and engage in some one-on-one conversation during the third phase, the guest chooses who they want to go out with, but not before taking off their clothes to reveal their naked self. Throughout it all, the host shares the results of sex studies relating to the topics of conversation, which are further explained with animated images.
Is It Any Good?
The popular very adult British series is a social experiment designed to eliminate the mystery behind what a person's body looks like and whether or not it's sexually attractive to someone they might date. The overall production, which has been successfully adapted in other countries around the world, creates a sense of inclusiveness thanks to featuring people with different sexual identities and orientations, all of whom differ in age, professions, and racial and ethnic backgrounds. It's also body positive, showcasing and celebrating different body types.
The conversations about preferred physical attributes and sexual attraction and behaviors are generally respectful and honest adult discussions. But as in all dating shows, expect lots of judgments based on the look of people's bodies and size and shapes of specific body parts as decisions are made about who to date and why. The studies that are cited are never clearly identified or appropriately attributed either, which also makes the source of the information a little suspect. But it's the casts' full-on frontal nudity, which is more culturally acceptable in other countries, that Stateside viewers may feel the most uneasy about. Not everyone will find Naked Attraction's messages informative or liberating, but there's no doubt that many will tune in out of curiosity or in search of some titillating entertainment.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the reasons showing nudity on TV and in movies is more acceptable in some cultures than others. What influences the way people think about seeing folks without clothes on? Should being naked always be associated with sex?
What is the purpose behind Naked Attraction? Is it to feature healthy and honest conversations about sexual attraction? Or is it to titillate audiences? Can it be both?
