What's the Story?

NEIGHBORS is an unscripted series about some of the weirdest and most dramatic conflicts within residential communities across the United States. Highlighting conflicts—from fighting over the use of beaches in front of expensive beachfront property in Florida to living off the grid in Montana while fighting over an old road that crosses someone's property line—it profiles the disputes and the people involved in them. Attempts to resolve some of the conflicts are also shown.

The demoralizing docuseries offers viewers a disturbing look at people who are unwilling to work together or compromise in order to live in harmony. Each Neighbors episode mixes two completely different storylines and some "artistic" (i.e., odd) editing choices, all of which makes the overall narrative feel disorganized. Within this chaos, individuals involved in these feuds are shown threatening and disrespecting one another in person and on social media and, in some cases, engaging in physical altercations to make a point. They're also shown unenthusiastically discussing their issues with each other in what appear to be staged scenes (often with the help of a mediator) that inevitably break down. There are no positive lessons or learning opportunities here. Instead, Neighbors is an attempt to exploit the worst in people for humorous reality entertainment. What it succeeds at is painting a pathetic picture of uncooperativeness, intolerance, and community erosion in the United States.
