What's the Story?

NINA THE STARRY BRIDE follows Nina (voiced in English by Jill Harris), an orphan living on the street, as she's given a second chance in life by Prince Azure (voiced by Ben Stegmair), who asks Nina to pose as the late Princess Alisha. Such deception could be deadly, but love, bravery, and a lot of optimism may help Nina change more than just her own fate.

This fluffy shojo romance packs a punch with deep themes and sympathetic characters. In Nina the Starry Bride, the love triangle is clichéd, and the romance is sometimes too fast-paced to be interesting. Fortunately, the non-romantic themes are the true star of the show. Court intrigue, high-stakes danger, and commentary on social norms make an otherwise mediocre love story worth watching.

That said, the setting raises some questions about cultural appropriation and colorism. It's nice to see a royal fantasy story that's not set in generic fantasy Europe. However, it's troubling that most characters are light-skinned. The Arab, Middle Eastern, and South Asian influences are only really seen in the clothing and architecture, but not the characters themselves.

  • Families can talk about processing trauma. How do characters' pasts affect them? What do they do to process those experiences and begin to change? How can you help a friend who has been through a difficult time?

  • Nina doesn't believe anything is "written in the stars." How does this philosophy help her navigate her new life? Does it ever cause problems for her?

  • How can characters tell if what they're feeling is love, friendship, or something else? How do their relationships show healthy boundaries, communication, and mutual respect?

  • How are characters affected by violence? How do they respond to violence? How could they deescalate violent situations or prevent violence from happening in the first place?
